London Then and Now
~ London, the capital and heart of Britain, is an exciting and constantly developing city. Established as a settlement when the Romans invaded in A.D. 43, the city has endured and grown for nearly two thousand years. While much of it was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666, some buildings can be traced back before this time, and the fire also provided an opportunity for architects like Sir Christopher Wren to rebuild a better, more magnificent city. Since then, many new, eye-catching structures have appeared on the London horizon along the famous River Thames. In spite of war time damage and postwar planning, the buildings that characterize London remain. St. Paul’s Cathedral stands out among the high-rise temples of commerce. The Gothic silhouette of the Palace of Westminster, home of the Houses of Parliament, is a breathtaking sight to behold, and visitors to London will also find Victorian market-places, royal palaces, and ancient churches. The remains of the Roman City Wall survive as evidence that “Londinium” can claim to stand alongside the oldest cities in the world. More recently, visitors to London’s South Bank district can watch plays at the reconstructed Globe Theatre, where Shakespeare would have watched his own works performed, and admire at the Tate Modern, an amazing refurbished power station. On the north side of the river are gleaming new office buildings and towers, such as Canary Wharf, which have risen among the remaining nineteenth-century warehouses and old docks. The book explores London’s landscape, past and present, through the eye of the camera. Historic photographs of London’s past are paired with specially commissioned contemporary views taken from the same vantage point.
